Understanding Your Baby's NICU Care Team

Every member of the team is here for your baby, and for you. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

The NICU Care Team

1

Attending Neonatologist

The team leader — makes medical decisions and oversees your baby's overall care.

2

Neonatology Fellow

A physician completing training to become a neonatologist; guides daily care alongside the attending.

3

Residents & Medical Students

Doctors in training who round daily, check progress, write orders, and ensure treatments are carried out.

4

Consultants

Specialists called in when needed — cardiology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, and more.

5

Nurse Practitioners / PAs

Perform procedures, write notes, and provide hands-on care under the neonatologist's guidance.

6

Nurses

Your baby's primary caregiver — day-to-day care, feedings, medications, and comfort.

7

Respiratory Therapists

Manage breathing support machines, suctioning, and positioning for babies needing ventilator, CPAP, or cannula.

8

Dietitians

Review growth, nutrition, and lab values to recommend the best feeding plan.

9

Pharmacists

Double-check every medication for safety, dosing, and compatibility with other treatments.

10

Help with practical and emotional needs — transportation, insurance, housing, and community resources.

11

Therapists

Speech, physical, and occupational therapists support feeding, movement, and sensory development.
